Highest Paid MLB Players 2022
Baseball has returned after some lockout complications, but at least the 2022 season is now underway.
Aside from the labor dispute, a handful of big-name players switched clubs this summer on big-money agreements. Kris Bryant, Freddie Freeman, Carlos Correa, and Max Scherzer are just some of the players that left their old MLB teams to sign lucrative long-term deals.
So, where do these guys rank among baseball’s highest-paid players now?
Max Scherzer – $43,333,333
Max Scherzer was lured to the New York Mets with a three-year, $130 million deal, which established a new record. The three-time Cy Young Award winner will receive an average yearly salary of almost $43 million, the biggest in MLB history.
Scherzer’s last contract was worth an average of $30 million per year.
Gerrit Cole – $36,000,000
Cole is now the second-highest paid player in baseball, after only Scherzer. The right-hander for the New York Yankees is in the third year of a nine-year, $324 million contract.
Mike Trout – $35,541,667
Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels is just over $500K behind Cole in terms of average yearly compensation, with $35.54 million. A 12-year, $426.5 million agreement was signed by the three-time MVP before the 2019 season.
Carlos Correa – $35,100,000
Carlos Correa, who inked a new contract this summer, is in fourth place. The two-time All-Star departed the Houston Astros for a three-year, $105 million agreement with the Minnesota Twins.
At age 35, Correa will make $35.1 million in 2022, more than he earned in his previous five seasons combined ($26.84 million).
Stephen Strasburg & Anthony Rendon – $35,000,000
Washington Nationals’ ace right-hander Stephen Strasburg and Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon are tied in 5th earning $35 million a year. This is just $100,000 short of Correa in 4th.
Francisco Lindor – $34,100,000
Francisco Lindor signed a new 10-year deal with the New York Mets in 2021 and this was worth $341 million. This means that his annual compensation is $34.1 million, making him the most expensive shortstop in the league.
Trevor Bauer – $34,000,000
Bauer earns $100,000 less than Lindor with his annual salary so he comes in at number 9 on the list. That makes his yearly compensation at the LA Dodgers $34 million.
He is still suspended at the moment though and involved in a domestic violence court battle against him. There’s talk that the Dodgers could cut ties with him should he win his suspension appeal. Although he’s a top pitcher, freeing up his salary from the roster might make sense.
Corey Seager – $32,500,000
Corey Seager, who signed a 10-year, $325 million deal with the Texas Rangers, is tied in 9th with Nolan Arenado.
Like Correa, the 2020 World Series MVP will earn more in a single season than he did throughout his stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which totaled $24.69 million. At $32.5 million a year, he’s now got a lot more money to spend.
Nolan Arenado – $32,500,000
Nolan Arenado is on the same money as Seager at the St. Louis Cardinals. His 8-year deal with the Cardinals was agreed upon in 2021 and was worth $260,000,000 over the entire contract.
